Marina Williams is an editorial and creative portrait photographer based in Salt Lake City, Utah. She is also known for her self-portraits and being an educator in the photography community. Marina’s work is rooted in unique locations, inventive posing, and bold fashion that enhances the person being photographed. She doesn’t allow for any of these potentially dominating concepts to overshadow her subject, rather to enhance the composition, experience, and finished product for her clients. I find these aspects of Marina’s work inspiring for my own practice.
I have been inspired by Marina’s colorful, bold, and gorgeous photography for years now. The way she works with fashion and her clients to create a visual experience is amazing. In my work, I try to bring in elements of the unique posing that she’s known for, a staple in Marina’s work is using arms and hands to create different looks, which I try to incorporate into my own. Playing with different angles like high shots and low shots is also something in her work that I find inspiring, it is amazing how different a composition looks when you view it from a different angle. If, I’m ever feeling in a creative rut when posing, I change up my angle. I also admire her ability to work in different lighting conditions and under different circumstances. This is something that I’m trying to be better about, expanding my creative range, and what that has looked like lately is shooting with flash and experimenting with shooting in direct sunlight, rather than backlit.
